Him: « The first time I saw her I thought she was coming straight out of an American movie: you know like the pompom girl you secretly admire but will never have? »
Her: « The first time I saw him I really thought he didn’t like me… he kept talking to his friend in Arabic without even addressing me a look! »
Both of them: « I never thought we would end up together! »
Haroun is Algerian, and Evelyn Belgian.
They met during their 1st year of highschool in Algiers, when Evelyn knew nothing about the country nor its culture.
Evelyn: « I was lucky enough not to have any expectations regarding love, like he has to be from that country and look like this or that..
I just knew what type of relationship I wanted….and I found it with an Algerian Muslim guy . »
Haroun: « I’ve never been against going out with someone from a different country. You know I’ve actually never been with an Algerian girl! (laughs) Just before meeting her and coming back to Algiers, I was living in Burkina Fasco where I never had to use the word stereotypes: so where she’s from, or where I’m from… it just doesn’t matter! »
Right after high school each of them took a different path: Evelyn went to study in Canada then in Belgium, Haroun in Bahrein then in Nice.
« What’s the border for us? »
Even as their close friend I was expecting them to speak about culture or religion but that was their answer:
« The only border keeping us apart is the distance. Being in a long distance relationship IS hard but the good moments make up for all the hard ones. »
They’ve been together for almost 7 years now.
Love really has no borders.
